Where god Taught the most important lesson of my ministry
The church that changed my ministry.
Age 24 – My first church assignment.
At twenty-four years old my denomination sent me to a church most believed had reached the end of its life.
It sat in a small, economically depressed community where everyone assumed significant growth was impossible.
When I arrived… there were twenty-four faithful little old ladies.
They loved me. They prayed for me. They baked me cookies.
But they couldn’t carry the weight of the vision God had placed in my heart.
That first year… I worked harder than I’d ever worked.
I preached harder. Visited more homes. Knocked on more doors.
Read every church-growth book I could find.
The church didn’t grow. It actually became smaller.
Then God taught me something I’ll never forget.
"Stop trying to grow the church.
Start building men who can carry more weight."
Once I intentionally started developing men… everything changed.
Families became stronger. Leaders emerged. Responsibility increased. The church began growing.
Eventually that little church became larger than the community where it was located.
That lesson has shaped every ministry assignment God has given me for the last thirty-five years.
